It is a mountain hermitage at Sinheungsa Temple, the headquarters of the 3rd diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. If you go up Seoraksan Mountain toward Ulsanbawi Rock, you will come across Heunbawi Rock, and there is a small hermitage on a large rock right behind it. The temple was built in a rock, and there is even an ondol (floor heating system) placed on the floor.
It is said that it was first built by Master Jajang of Silla to practice asceticism. Afterwards, several masters such as Wonhyo, Uisang, Ji-gak, and Bong-jeong passed down the practice to practice asceticism, so it was named Gyejoam. The rock on which Gyejoam sits is Moktak Rock, and since this hermitage is inside Moktak, it is said that studies that would take 10 years at other temples can be completed in 5 years.
