It is located in Mureung Valley, Samhwa-dong, to the north of Dutasan Mountain (1351m). Samhwasa Temple, along with nearby Cheoneunsa Temple, Yeongeunsa Temple, and Jjijisa Temple, is a central temple in the southern region of Yeongdong. It has a deep history with the Zen sect and has the names of Samgongam, Cheokyeondae, and Jungdaesa. There are three founding stories related to this temple, and according to Samhwasa Sajik, Jinjuji, etc., it is said that it began with the founding of Heukyeondae by Master Ksitigarbha in the 11th year of King Seondeok of Silla (642), but this is unreliable.
< br />Meanwhile, in , there is a record that State Preceptor Beomil, the founder of Gulsansa Temple in the late Silla Dynasty, and in , there is a record that State Preceptor Beomil entered the mountain in the fourth year of King Heungdeok of Silla (829) and built a Buddhist temple, calling it Samgongam. Considering these records and existing relics, Samhwasa Temple can be generally considered to have been founded in the late Silla Dynasty.

This temple was originally located near Banneung, about 1.3km to the east, and is now located in the Mureung Valley. Moved to location. Samhwasa Temple, which was destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times, was used as a base for the Samcheok region's volunteer army in 1905, and in 1906, Japan destroyed the 200-room building, including Daeungjeon and Seondang, for the reason of destroying the base of the volunteer army. Burned it down. The following year, 1908, the main hall was opened. Yosachae. Chilseongdang was rebuilt and maintained and moved to its current location in 1977. It is now Samseonggak, including Daeungjeon. It consists of buildings such as Beomjonggak, Yukhwaro, Cheonwangmun, and Yosachae, and major cultural assets include a three-story stone pagoda, an iron Buddha, a wooden Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva statue, a stupa, and a monument.
