Description of art “Mickey’s House?Cloud” (2005-2006), first shown at Kang’s 2006 solo exhibition “Play With Landscape” at the Rodin Gallery, features a brightcolored toy house placed, for no apparent reason, atop a brick wall. To the left in the distance stands a mountain peak and right above the toy house floats a fluffy cloud. The photograph was taken at an abandoned house that would soon be torn down for the construction of Eunpyeong New Town in Seoul. In Kang’s own words, he used the toy house that he picked up on the street to photograph “a fake empty house placed in a real empty house.” Perhaps Kang was trying to make a statement that for ordinary working-class citizens, owning a home in Seoul is a fairy-tale dream, like reaching for the clouds. The work is, in other words, a witty critique on the social reality surrounding urban renewal, the uprooting of existing communities, and Seoul’s severe housing problem.
