Description of art “Panacea” (2000) is an extension of “Pixel” from the 1990s, in which a pixel, the smallest unite in an all points addressable display device, is brought to the foreground of photographs. Like the “Pixel” series, in which subjects are most closely captured and pixels that are so large that the original subject is unrecognizable are rearranged, small tablets from “Panacea” is extremely maximized. A huge tablet around the height of a person, 160cm, lose original functions and are transformed into a visual art work comprised of stylish colors and composition. Thus, by replacing the essence of the material and transforming the meaning of it, Hwang has continued new attempt to go beyond the limit of photography, which takes existing objects as subjects.
