Description of art | “Umber Blue 77 #41” (1977) was made relatively early in Yun’s career. Two tall pillars slanted to the right fill up most of the canvas, and upon closer inspection, each pillar is revealed to have been painted with layers of brushstrokes. As a result, the pillar forms give the impression of being softly swaying rather than being firm and solid. This expression is further reinforced by the effect of paint and oil spreading over multiple, overlapping layers of linen that have not been primed by gesso. As this piece shows, Yun’s earlier works are characterized by a stronger seepage effect than his later ones. This shift in the level of blurring and instability can be seen as a reflection of Yun’s emotional life during his forties, given that he considered his paintings to be traces left from the combustion of his life. | ||||||
