Description of art 〈Family〉(1981) is a copperplate print of a sleeping family. In the 1980s, Nho Wonhee’s works critically dealt with the unfair social reality within the field of the art. In the work, sleeping family members, including two children who have fallen asleep on a narrow bed, a sleeping mother sitting with her head buried in her arms, and a father who couldn’t sleep with a turned head deep in thought, are portrayed against a dark background. It is a scene where the weight of their hard lives and the fatigue of reality are powerfully conveyed to the viewer. Rather than criticizing reality or explaining everything in detail, the artist just looks at, empathizes, and cares for the family. This attitude is also passed on to the viewer and makes them feel and understand the pain of cruel reality rather than pity, sadness, or despair. As such, Nho’s works sometimes go back and forth between social messages and the vivid representation of everyday life.
