Description of art “2004?6 Green Barley Field?Thistle and a Pair of White Butterflies 1” (2004) is the epitome of Lee’s barely field paintings from the 2000s when she produced an especially large volume of pieces of this kind. In the work, the barley field covering most of the canvas is rendered in extreme detail: on the bottom in the foreground, every single barley plant, green and fresh, stands vertically and on the upper part, the ears are blowing in all directions as if waves are rolling with wind. Between the two, the contrast arises, creating a scene that embodies the spirit of the barley field the painter wants to contain in her art. During this period, she often painted a few wild flowers blooming in the barley field, a representation of strong vitality and willpower. These modest flowers in such a setting can be seen not only as the symbol of the joy of life but also as the portrait of the painter’s art itself.
