Description of art | “The Land I Should Plough II” (1988), created a year later, depicts a scene in which miscellaneous items are piled up under the legs of a young man posed as if plunging into the paddies with hoe in hand. This work depicts the land contaminated and deserted due to the by-products of the cities, evoking simultaneously the souls of the farmers who had suffered during the devastation of their farming villages. Kim adopted the identical, highlighted contour lines to mark the furrows crossing the paddies and to highlight the figure of a young man, instilling a sense of rhythm into the canvas. Against the backdrop of intensifying alienation in Korean rural communities, Kim surveyed the land, drew the earth on his canvas, and ploughed the fields on which the people had built their lives. | ||||||
