Description of art “Figure” (1989), produced while he was struggling financially as a student in New York, is a reinterpretation of a nude photograph of the painter himself, which was taken by his wife at his request. The naked man, whose hollow-cheeked face is hidden in the darkness, is leaning his body forward, as if to try to stand up from the ground with one hand on his knee. He appears to be trying to straighten his posture, but his enervated body is drooping and his figure, in combination with the loose matiere of acrylic paint running down to the floor, vividly conveys the painter’s mentality as he finds himself trapped in darkness and unable to escape. The painting, produced through Oh’s endless attempts to objectify himself, reflects his complicated mental state, which swings back and forth from objective judgement to self-love.
