Description of art | 〈Division Landscape series〉(1991) deals with the division issue between South and North Koreans, one of the most important topics in Jeong Insook’s photography. It started with her trip to the South Korean East Sea in 1987, followed by Sokcho Kangwon-do, Yangyang, Jumunjin, five islands in the West Sea, and Panmunjeom (truce village) to capture traces of division such as barbed wire, checkpoints, and bunkers on the border. The military facilities in her photos sometimes look clumsy and ridiculous. Large soldier dolls for camouflage instead of real soldiers at the checkpoints and bunkers, or shields and empty carts poorly blocking the entrance of a cave directly connected to North Korea instead of a tight security fence, are all offered as simply shabby symbols of the division. These symbols reveal the ongoing scars of the Korean War as well as “quasi-archaic remains of old war technology that has already been scrapped or discarded,” as Choi Min pointed out. Choi Min also addressed that Jeong Insook’s photos show things that she wants to expel from her memory permanently, lurking behind her subconscious. | ||||||
