Description of art | Critical review of Joo’s works in the 1960s suggests he did not simply capture reality as did the photographers of the previous generation, but was the first to convey a photographer’s subjective ideas in photographs. He began photography by joining Modern Photography Society, an organization for studying photography, in 1962. The series “Seoul” is a collection he worked on before becoming a magazine photographer in 1968. This work can be categorized as documentary photographs conveying realistic scenes of Seoul. This work is considered a documentary photograph capturing realistic images of Seoul, and remarkable in its journalistic nature that does justice to the life and culture of the times. But the mundane, everyday life in the scenes of Seoul he captured is not just simple and objective documentary photographs. They show emotions and stories of the human figures, evoking nostalgia and the sentiment of the time. | ||||||
