崇林寺是益山金山寺下的主要寺廟之一，據一些人認為是新羅時期慶德王（742-764）統治時期由僧侶真表律寺建造的。也有人認為該寺建於1345年高麗忠穆王元年。臨津戰爭（1592-1598）期間該寺被燒毀，僅存普光殿。寺廟的殘骸後來於 1697 年、1819 年和 1892 年修復。
