美皇寺建於新羅慶德王八年（749年），位於被譽為南海金剛山的達馬山（489公尺）西側。該寺廟位於朝鮮半島所有寺廟的最南端。美麗的日落和從寺廟眺望的達馬山的優雅景色吸引了許多遊客。寺廟後面的山腳與大小合適的寺廟融為一體，大雄寶殿的外觀給人一種舒適寧靜的感覺。大雄寶殿的基石上雕刻著在其他地方看不到的海龜、螃蟹等海洋生物。其他景點包括大雄寶殿和熊仁殿牆上的 18 世紀壁畫。
