1929年，金海金前往濟州島途中發現了摩多島。他將這個島稱為“Ttiseom”，因為島上生長著大量的“ttipul 草”，這是一種原產於韓國的草。島上還有許多用乾茅草搭建的茅草屋頂的房屋。莫多島這個名字來自漢字“Ttiseom”。
