龜岩因其岩石形狀酷似海龜爬出岩石而得名。龜岩是由鬱陵島早期火山活動的熔岩形成的火山岩。沿著岩石的斜坡仍然可以看到凝固的熔岩流和冷卻的邊緣。岩石的西側懸崖是通古米村，那裡是野生杜松樹的家。岩石的西北側是大豐甘村，也是野生杜松樹的自然棲息地。由於其重要性，這兩個地點都被指定為天然紀念物。眾所周知，由於狂風的影響，這裡的杜松樹的生長速度比正常條件下的要慢。
