香天寺是百濟時代後期義子王統治時期由義覺和尚創建的古寺。儘管寺廟位於金烏山山腳山谷深處，但從市中心可輕鬆前往，是遊客輕鬆漫步或徒步上山的地標。寺廟遺址和建築保存完好，每天都打掃得井井有條，擁有數件文物和一座九層石塔。
根據傳說，義岳和尚原本打算在禮山新南面建造一座寺廟。他到中國帶來了一尊佛像，在船上虔誠地祈禱。到達後，他看到船上有一對金烏飛過，他跟著金烏，直到它們消失了。他在寺廟現在的位置發現了這些鳥，它們正在喝一灘散發著芳香氣味的水。從此這座山被稱為金烏山，意思是“金烏山”，寺廟被命名為“香泉寺”，意思是“香水寺”。 |
