崇林寺是益山金山寺下的主要寺庙之一，据一些人认为是新罗时期景德王（742-764）统治时期由僧侣真表律寺建造的。也有人认为该寺建于1345年高丽忠穆王元年。崇林寺是为了纪念在城山深处的脱林寺修行九年的菩提达摩高僧而命名的。在中国。临津战争（1592-1598）期间该寺被烧毁，仅存普光殿。寺庙的残骸后来于 1697 年、1819 年和 1892 年进行了修复。
