1929年，金海金前往济州岛途中发现了摩多岛。他把这个岛称为“Ttiseom”，因为岛上有大量的“ttipul 草”，这是一种原产于韩国的草。岛上还有许多用干茅草搭建的茅草屋顶的房屋。莫多岛这个名字来自汉字“Ttiseom”。
