临津战争（1592-1598）期间，首都及周边地区的许多国家档案馆被烧毁。此后，档案被复制并存放在全县各地。赤相山国家档案馆成立于 1614 年，当时重要的国家档案馆从妙香书院移出，并于 1641 年增设了其他档案馆。这个国家档案馆在韩国 300 多年的历史中发挥了非常重要的作用，直到它关闭日本占领时期由日本人所为。
