도피안사는 통일신라 경문왕 5년(865)에 도선대사가 창건한 사찰이다. 높이 91cm의 철원 비로자나불좌상이 철원 안양사로 옮겨지던 중 사라졌다가 현재 자리에 신기하게 발견되었기 때문에 도선스님이 이 사찰을 창건했다는 전설이 있다.
철로 만든 불상이 영원한 안식처라는 뜻의 '피안'에 이르렀다는 뜻에서 도피안사라는 이름을 붙였다. 도선스님이 제작한 전설적인 철조여래여래좌상(국보) 외에 높이 4.1m의 삼층석탑(보물)도 있다. |
