월미공원은 국방부가 50년 넘게 군 막사로 사용했던 곳이다. 인천시가 재개발해 2001년 9월 10일 커뮤니티 공간으로 개장했다. 시 관계자는 이 땅의 역사와 잘 보존된 자연환경을 인지하고 누구나 접근할 수 있는 생태·역사적 공간으로 탈바꿈시켰다. 공원은 학생들의 교육 공간이자 지역 주민들의 휴식 공간이기도 합니다.
