용흥궁은 철종(재위 1849~1863)이 즉위하기 전 살던 곳이다. 강화군수 정기세가 철종 4년에 원래 살던 집을 증축하고 이름을 용흥궁(용흥궁)이라 명명하였다. 팔작지붕과 주심포양식의 받침기둥, 기둥 상부에만 기둥받침대를 설치한 것이 건축학적 특징이다. 창덕궁 영경당, 낙선재 등 전통 가옥을 본떠 지은 궁궐이라 궁궐 건물이 소박하고 담백한 분위기를 자아낸다. 궁궐 경내에는 철종의 옛 집이었던 것을 알려주는 비석과 비석이 있다.
