구례읍에서 동쪽으로 5.4km 떨어진 지리산 기슭에 위치한 화엄사는 백제 성왕 22년(544)에 창건되었으나 임진왜란 때 소실되었다. 사찰은 7년의 재건 끝에 1636년에 재건되었습니다. 사찰에는 국보, 보물, 천연기념물, 지역문화재 등 다양한 문화재와 20여 채의 건물이 있다.
