1929년 모도는 김해김이 제주도로 가던 길에 발견됐다. 섬에 한국 자생 풀인 티풀이 많이 자라서 그 섬을 띠섬이라 불렀다. 섬에는 마른 띠풀로 만든 초가집도 많았다. 모도라는 이름은 '띠섬'을 뜻하는 한자에서 따왔다.
