주왕산(720.6m)은 한반도의 중추인 백두대간 산맥에 위치해 있다. 산은 깊은 계곡과 깎아지른 듯한 기암절벽이 많아 우리나라에서 세 번째로 큰 암산이다. 주왕산은 1972년 5월 30일에 관광명소로 지정되었고, 몇 년 뒤인 1976년 3월 30일에 12번째 국립공원이 되었습니다. 계곡을 따라 폭포까지 산책로가 있어 한가롭게 산책할 수 있다.
주왕산은 신라시대에는 돌봉우리가 많이 튀어나와 석병산이라 불렸으나 통일신라시대부터 주왕산이라 불렸다. 주왕산국립공원에는 이러한 높은 암봉 외에도 4개의 폭포, 동굴, 대전사 등의 명소가 있어 종합관광지로 자리매김하고 있습니다. |
