화암사는 조선시대 학자이자 문필가인 김정희(추사)의 집 근처에 위치해 있다. 이 사찰은 김정희의 증조부가 중수하고 중수한 것으로 알려져 있어 고대 문인과 인연이 깊다. 화암사의 창건에 대해 설명하는 기록은 없고, 수덕사박물관에 전시된 '화암사 중흥기록' 현판에서 중건 시기만 확인할 수 있다. 연대표는 1848년 김명희가 기록하고, 김성희가 쓰고, 조석신이 새겼다. 화암사라는 이름은 영조(재위 1724-1776) 때 지어졌다.
