백련사는 충청북도 제천시 감악산 자락에 위치한 사찰이다. 현재 사찰은 대웅전, 삼성각, 무염당, 보응문, 주택 등으로 구성되어 있다. 대웅전은 목조여래좌상을 모시고 있는 조선시대(1392~1910) 유물이다.
사찰의 역사는 662년(신라 문무왕 2) 의상대사가 백연지 동쪽 기슭에 백련암이라는 작은 사당을 창건한 것으로 거슬러 올라간다. 여러 전쟁을 거치면서 사원은 여러 번 재건되고 복원되었습니다. 한때는 미륵사, 신흥사, 천수암, 은적암, 청련암 등 여러 사찰과 사당을 포괄했으나 현재는 그 터만 남아 있다. |
