緑東書院儒学院は、壬辰倭乱（1592～1598年）中に日本の侵略から韓国を守ることに多大な貢献をした金忠善将軍（1571～1642）を記念して1789年に建てられました。アカデミーは 1868 年に閉鎖されましたが、1885 年に再開されました。その後、1971 年に現在の場所に移転しました。現在、この堂には金将軍の位牌が安置されており、毎年3月に追悼式が行われている。緑東書院の敷地内には、緑東寺、崇義堂、香陽門、記念石などの観光スポットが近くにあります。
