新羅景徳王 8 年 (749 年) に建立された美皇寺は、南海の金剛山と称される達馬山 (489 メートル) の西側に位置しています。この寺院は朝鮮半島のすべての寺院の中で最も南に位置しています。寺院から眺める美しい夕日と優雅な達馬山の眺めは、多くの観光客を魅了しています。寺院の背後にある山の麓は適切な規模の寺院と調和しており、大雄宝殿の外観は安らぎと静けさを醸し出しています。大雄宝殿の礎石には、他では見ることのできない亀やカニなどの海洋生物が彫られています。その他の見どころとしては、大雄宝殿と雲仁殿の壁に描かれた 18 世紀の壁画などがあります。
