GANGWON-DO WEATHER
* The legend of the pheasant that returned the favor, Sangwonsa Temple (Wonju) *
Sangwonsa Temple is a temple located at the foot of Namdaebong (1,182m) at the southern end of Chiaksan Mountain. It is built on a stone floor measuring about 100 pyeong. Cool spring water gushes out from a gap in the rock in front of the temple, and in front of it is a 40m cliff. At the end of the cliff is a rare cassia tree. Guru is standing. The story of the pheasant that returned the favor, which gave rise to Chiaksan Mountain, is a legend that originated in this temple. The exact date of Sangwonsa Temple's founding is unclear, but judging from relics such as the stone pagoda in the temple, it is presumed to have been founded during the Silla period. The two stone pagodas in front of the temple add to the majesty of Gosan Temple, and are designated as Gangwon-do cultural assets. Sangwonsa Temple, located in Seongnam 2-ri, Sillim-myeon, is a temple located under Namdaebong of Chiaksan Mountain. It is said that it was founded by Master Uisang during the reign of King Munmu of the Silla Dynasty, and Seonmu Muchak, who was the royal priest of King Gyeongsun in the late Silla Dynasty, returned from the Tang Dynasty and prayed to Bodhisattva Manju while meditating at Sangwonsa Temple on Mt. Odaesan. There is a legend that it was founded as a government law. Since its founding, the statue of Meowth was rebuilt at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, Zen masters such as Wolbong, Wihak, Jeongam, Haebong, Samgong, and Chuknyeom practiced here, and several kings of the Joseon Dynasty are said to have prayed for Guktaeminan at this temple. It was burnt down and ruined during the Korean War, but was rebuilt in 1968 by Buddhist priest Song Mun-yeong and Uiseong Bodhisattva, the chief priests at the time.
* Remains of Sangwonsa Temple *
Existing buildings include Daeungjeon, Simwoodang, Simgeomdang, Beomjongak, and Sansingak, which were designated as cultural assets on June 2, 1984. There are twin pagodas side by side around the main hall, and these twin pagodas appeared generally after the unification of the Three Kingdoms and became popular throughout the country due to the prosperous national power. This stone pagoda follows the typical form of a Silla stone pagoda with a three-story roof on a double-layered unit, and the upper upper part is engraved with a round lotus bud shape, showing a style that is difficult to find in ordinary pagodas.
