Cheonggyeseowon was built in 1833 (the 33rd year of King Sunjo's reign). It was built by Eunyeolgong Jeong Shin-yeol, who contributed to repelling the Khitan invasion during the reign of King Hyeonjong of the Goryeo Dynasty, and made a spinning wheel in the late Goryeo Dynasty to provide warm cotton (木棉) to the people. This is a seowon that enshrined the memorial tablet of Mun Chung-gong (文忠公) Jeong Cheon-ik (鄭天益), who made him wear cotton clothes. The two were appointed Jinyang Buwongun and Jinyanggun, respectively. It was originally built in Madong, Daepyeong-myeon, but was demolished in 1868 (the 5th year of King Gojong's reign) when Heungseon Daewongun ordered the abolition of Confucian academies, and was restored to its current location in 1961. In 1961, descendants began a restoration project here, building Gyeongdeoksa Temple and Orthodox Church, and continued the tradition under the name of Bongnam Seodang. From 1986 to 1993, Sungeunsa Temple and Jinsacheong were rebuilt and restored as Cheonggyeseowon, where they are held every year according to the lunar calendar. A ancestral rite is being held at the shrine on March 15.
