JEOLLANAM-DO WEATHER
The total area of the reed fields in Suncheon Bay, spanning Gyoryang-dong and Daedae-dong in Suncheon City, Jungheung-ri in Haeryong-myeon, and Seonhak-ri in Haechang-ri, is approximately 150,000 pyeong. Both sides of the 3km long waterway from the confluence of Dongcheon, which runs through downtown Suncheon, and Isacheon, which flows from Sangsa-myeon, Suncheon, to the estuary, are covered with reed fields. Unlike other reed fields that are sparsely spaced or sparsely clustered, this is a field of reeds that are densely grown with reeds much taller than a person's height. It is said to be the largest reed colony in the country, and it is quite spectacular to see the puffy seed clusters of the reeds changing color to silver, gray, and gold depending on the energy of the sunlight. Moreover, the scenery of the entire reed forest flowing all at once in the wind that blows at the right time is as majestic and beautiful as the waves rippling in the open sea.
Daedae-dong, which is almost buried in the reed field, forms the largest community area centered on the dock, and is located in Sangnae-ri, Haeryong-myeon. Waon Village is a place where you can enjoy the sunset over a wide mud flat, and is a popular destination for tourists and photographers. The Suncheon Bay area, which consists of 27 ㎢ estuary salt marshes and mud flats, including 21.6 ㎢ mudflats and 5.4 ㎢ reed fields surrounded by a 9.8 km coastline, is not only full of reed fields. From afar, it looks like a field of reeds, but if you look closer, you can see silver grass, mugwort, etc. forming large and small groups here and there. And on the other side of the reed field of the estuary, there is a colony of reddish horseradish. In addition, this is a place where 11 species of internationally rare birds or designated as natural monuments, including black-crowned cranes, white-naped cranes, storks, spoonbills, and black-faced plovers, fly here, and it is known as the area with the largest number of rare birds among wetlands around the world. In addition to these rare birds, about 140 species of birds, including snipe, mallards, hump-billed ducks, and wild geese, are said to winter or breed in the Suncheon Bay area.
