Dongbaek Garden, located in Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, is another famous spot for Jeju eco-tourism. Dongbaek Garden was recognized for its ecological excellence and was designated as a Ramsar wetland in 2011 and a representative global geopark in 2014. Gotjawal, a forest in Jeju that was formed by the splitting of lava that flowed after a volcanic eruption, has a structure that makes it difficult to create a wetland where water accumulates. However, in Dongbaek Garden, the lava remains in the form of a plate and the water does not drain and remains stagnant. This is called ‘Pahoehoi lava’, and this lava creates wetlands, caves, and lava hills called tumulus, forming a forest. In Dongbaek-dong Mountain, the largest evergreen forest in the country, you can find Meonmulkkak, a wetland that never dries all year round. The name is a combination of the meaning of ‘moonmul’ because it is far from the village and ‘kkak’, which means ‘end’. Munmulkkak is a treasure trove of life where various aquatic plants, insects, and amphibians live. A fireball that has turned into a stone, trees and vines that depend on each other and grow taller, countless lives living in a healthy ecosystem, that is Dongbaek Garden.
In addition, the carbon emissions of two programs using solar power generation was reduced by 99%, and in 2019, two eco-friendly travel programs, including ‘Let’s Play Together Around the Neighborhood’ and ‘Camellia Blooming’, also obtained low-carbon product certification from the Ministry of Environment.
