Seolrimwonji, located at the entrance to Micheonggol Natural Recreation Forest in Seomyeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, is a temple site from the Unified Silla period. Seonlimwon is a temple built by Monk Sunsul, who founded Haeinsa Temple, and its founding date became known after a temple bell with the date 804 was found at the temple site. At the end of the 9th century, it was rebuilt by Zen Master Honggak and became a representative temple of Zen Buddhism. In its heyday, there were so many monks that the water from which rice was washed during offerings turned the valley white, which is why the valley was named ‘Micheon (米川) Valley.’ It is presumed that it was buried by a landslide due to a major flood around the 10th century. Today, the cornerstone of the Geumdang building with 3 rooms on the front and 4 rooms on the side remains at the temple site, allowing us to guess what it looked like in the past. Several cultural assets remain, including the Yangyang Seollimwonji three-story stone pagoda (treasure), the Yangyang Seollimwonji stone lantern (treasure), the Yangyang Seollimwonji monument to Monk Honggak (treasure), and the Yangyang Seollimwonji pagoda (treasure). The Yangyang Seonlimwonji Three-story Stone Pagoda is a typical Silla stone pagoda with a three-story pagoda body on a two-story stylobate. Yangyang Seollimwonji Pagoda was damaged during the Japanese colonial period and was restored to its current location, and only the base remains.
