新萬金這個名字象徵著擴大和清新萬慶平原和金堤平原的防波堤，這些平原以其肥沃的土壤而聞名。新萬金於1991年開始建設，歷時19年才完工。河口大壩長約33.9公里，平均寬290米，最寬處535公尺。平均x_height為36米，最高點高54米。新萬金被認為是最長的人造海障，其次是荷蘭須德海工程大壩。
