별도봉(別刀峯, 禾北峰)은 화산 쇄설성(碎屑性) 퇴적암과 용암으로 이루어진 기생화산으로 화북1동의 동쪽 해안에 자리하고 있다. 정상봉에서 북쪽사면은 급경사를 이루는 가파른 절벽으로 속칭 '자살바위'라 부르는 큰 바위가 있으며, 벼랑 밑 해안단에는 '고래굴'과 '애기업은돌(負兒石)'이라 불리는 기암이 있다.
별도봉은 해발 136m의 낮은 산이지만 해안 절벽을 끼고 조성해 놓은 총 1.8km의 제주시 최고의 산책로로 평가받을 정도의 경관이 빼어나기로 유명한 '장수산책로(長壽散策路)'가 있는데, 이곳에서는 높은 봉우리와 제주항 및 마을전경, 드넓은 푸른바다 등 아름다운 해안절경이 한눈에 내려다보여 연인끼리 혹은 가족끼리 산책할 수 있는 아름다운 장소로 많은 관광객이 찾는다. |
